boys wearing clothing from the traveling trunkThis is truly a hands on educational opportunity to understand the merging of cultures in the early settlement of New Mexico. The trunks are intended for use by various educational programs in Albuquerque. With continued support from: The Friends for the Public Library, Center for the Book, APS Teaching American History grant, and the help of other community resources, several additional trunks are planned.

Procedure for Checkout

1. Loan Period: A trunk can be checked out for two to three weeks. If the trunk meets the needs of other social studies teachers at your school, please share rather than having to checkout again.

2. Responsibility: The teacher checking out the trunk is responsible for the contents and its gentle handling, bearing the responsibility for damaged and/or missing items. However, we do want the students have a great hands-on experience with the contents. There is a list of everything in the trunk along with pictures of each item and how and where it is packed. We encourage you to check the trunk before you take it to your school.

3. Pick-up/Return: The Trunks are kept at the Main Library, 501 Copper Ave NW, in the Genealogy Center on the 2nd floor. The teacher is responsible for picking up the trunk and returning it. Come with help! The trunk weighs approximately 75 lbs. It does have wheels and a pull strap. However, remember you must be able to lift it into and out of your vehicle. The approximate dimensions are: 36" L x 19" W x 18" H.

We encourage you to be prepared to use the trunk as soon as you check it out so that you can get the maximum use of it before it is due back to us.

4. Reservations/Questions: Email or call 768-5131

Remember: The Main Library is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Tuesday and Wednesday it is open 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
